Rock in Rio 2026 begins with Foo Fighters: Elton John, Calvin Harris, Stray Kids and Maroon 5 headline seven days of music in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro once again becomes one of the main centers of the global concert industry on September 4. Rock in Rio 2026 opens the gates of Cidade do Rock in the Olympic Park, and the first festival evening will be headlined by Foo Fighters, who will close the program on the main Palco Mundo stage. The edition runs for seven festival days scheduled for September 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13, with two clearly defined sections: the first extended weekend, which ends on Brazil's Independence Day on September 7, and the final three-day block from September 11 to 13. According to official information from the organizers, the program once again takes place at Cidade do Rock, the festival complex in the southwestern part of Rio de Janeiro that in recent editions has been associated with the Olympic Park area.
This year's program confirms the strategy through which Rock in Rio has long gone beyond the framework of a classic rock festival. Alongside Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Bring Me The Horizon and Sepultura, the major stages will feature Calvin Harris, Black Eyed Peas, Nelly, Elton John, Gilberto Gil, Stray Kids, Maroon 5, Demi Lovato, J Balvin, Twenty One Pilots and Halsey. Ahead of the festival, organizers stated that the 2026 edition includes 45 international artists, while Folha de S.Paulo reported that around 190 performances involving more than 1,300 performers will take place over the seven days. The range from rock and metal to K-pop, electronic music, hip-hop and Brazilian popular music confirms that Rock in Rio today operates as a broadly conceived music and entertainment event.
Foo Fighters open the festival, while the first day remains firmly dominated by guitars
The September 4 program on Palco Mundo has been designed as a distinctly rock-oriented evening. According to the published schedule, Nova Twins perform at 16:40, The Hives at 19:00, Rise Against at 21:20, and Foo Fighters take the stage five minutes after midnight. For audiences arriving before the main performances, the programs on the other stages are equally important: at Sunset, Capital Inicial will perform, among others, together with Dado Villa-Lobos, while the electronic New Dance Order area will later in the night be taken over by Steve Angello. Such a distribution confirms that the festival program has long ceased to be limited only to the main stage.
Foo Fighters arrive in Rio as one of the biggest international rock bands of recent decades, and when announcing their appearance, organizers described it as the band's exclusive concert in Brazil as part of this festival cycle. Their position on opening night also carries symbolic weight: in recent years Rock in Rio has increasingly expanded toward pop and electronic music, but the beginning of the 2026 edition once again emphasizes the guitar-driven identity from which the festival emerged. The Hives and Rise Against bring different generations and subgenres of rock, while Nova Twins represent a more contemporary, genre-hybrid approach combining alternative rock, punk and electronic elements. The first day therefore clearly establishes a rock framework before the genre shifts that follow later.
Avenged Sevenfold, Bring Me The Horizon, MGK and Sepultura define September 5
The second festival day, September 5, retains the weight of guitars, but shifts the program toward metal, post-hardcore and modern arena rock. The published Palco Mundo schedule lists Sepultura at 16:40, MGK, or Machine Gun Kelly, at 19:00, Bring Me The Horizon at 21:20 and Avenged Sevenfold five minutes after midnight. Particular attention is drawn to the appearance of Sepultura, one of Brazil's most internationally recognizable metal bands, on the festival's largest stage. On the same evening, Bad Omens and Poppy perform at Sunset, while domestic and regionally known heavier-sounding artists appear in other areas.
This combination demonstrates the festival's attempt to bring together several different generations of audiences on a single day. Avenged Sevenfold represents a major American metal band with a long festival reputation, Bring Me The Horizon has in recent years expanded its sound far beyond its original metalcore framework, while MGK has strongly extended his career from hip-hop toward pop-punk and rock. Sepultura, meanwhile, carries a different kind of historical significance as a band that made the Brazilian metal scene globally visible as early as the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. In this way, Rock in Rio combines local heritage and contemporary international production on the same evening.
Calvin Harris and Black Eyed Peas change the festival's rhythm on Sunday
After two days of strong rock and metal programming, on September 6 Palco Mundo shifts toward electronic music, hip-hop and major radio hits. Barão Vermelho, reunited with its original lineup, opens the main program, followed by Nelly and Black Eyed Peas, while Calvin Harris closes the evening. According to the published times, Harris performs after midnight, while Black Eyed Peas are scheduled for 21:20. Ne-Yo performs on the Sunset stage the same day, and the program also includes Jota Quest with a project dedicated to the music of Tim Maia, BaianaSystem and Calema.
The festival's electronic segment on September 6 is further emphasized by the New Dance Order program, where performers such as Sofi Tukker, LIU and Meduza have been announced. This clearly sets Sunday apart from the previous two evenings and creates a day aimed at dance audiences. Calvin Harris has for years ranked among the most commercially successful producers and DJs on the global pop-electronic scene, while Black Eyed Peas and Nelly bring catalogs of songs that strongly defined mainstream music in the 2000s. Such a programming shift is one of the key characteristics of the contemporary Rock in Rio.
Elton John and Gilberto Gil on Brazil's Independence Day
The first festival block ends on September 7, Brazil's Independence Day, with an evening bringing together several artists with exceptionally long and influential careers. On Palco Mundo, Luísa Sonza performs with Roberto Menescal, followed by Jon Batiste, Gilberto Gil and Elton John. According to the officially published schedule, Gilberto Gil performs in the evening slot, while Elton John closes the main stage after midnight. On Sunset the same day, Vanessa da Mata and Rubel, Roupa Nova and Guilherme Arantes, Péricles with a program dedicated to Motown, and Laufey appear.
Bringing Elton John and Gilberto Gil together on the same festival day gives the program additional significance. Elton John represents one of the most successful singer-songwriter careers in the history of British and global pop music, while Gilberto Gil is a key figure in Brazilian music, particularly in the tropicália movement, as well as through a long period in which he combined samba, rock, reggae, funk and other influences. Jon Batiste brings contemporary American jazz, soul and pop, while the performance by Luísa Sonza with Roberto Menescal links current Brazilian pop production with the legacy of bossa nova. Because of this range, September 7 stands out as one of the broadest-ranging evenings of the entire edition.
Stray Kids headline K-pop day, followed by Maroon 5, Demi Lovato and J Balvin
After a three-day break, the festival returns on September 11 with a program in which K-pop is for the first time placed so strongly at the center of Rock in Rio's main stage. NEXZ opens Palco Mundo, followed by Hwasa, then Alok with the Keep Art Human project, while Stray Kids close the evening. According to official announcements from the organizers, the day featuring Stray Kids was among the dates that very quickly generated major interest during the presale, confirming how much international festival power K-pop has gained outside Asian markets. On the same day Sunset features Jamiroquai and PJ Morton, creating, alongside K-pop, parallel space for funk, soul, jazz and acid-jazz audiences.
The following day, September 12, the Palco Mundo program shifts toward pure global pop. Pedro Sampaio performs first, followed by J Balvin, Demi Lovato and finally Maroon 5. At Sunset, Mumford & Sons, João Gomes with Orquestra Brasileira, Gilsons with Daniela Mercury and Olodum, as well as Criolo, Amaro & Dino have been announced. It is one of the festival's most genre-diverse days: Colombian reggaeton and the Latin pop of J Balvin are positioned alongside the American pop of Demi Lovato and Maroon 5, while Sunset connects British folk-rock with Brazilian regional and Afro-Brazilian musical traditions.
Twenty One Pilots and Halsey close the seven-day program
On the final day, September 13, the main stage features Ivete Sangalo, Lola Young, Halsey and Twenty One Pilots. According to the schedule reported by Gshow, CNN Brasil and other Brazilian media, Twenty One Pilots close Palco Mundo five minutes after midnight, while Halsey performs before them. Sunset ends with Zara Larsson, preceded on that stage by Marina Sena with Céu, Joelma with Viviane Batidão, and Carol Biazin with Joyce Alane. The electronic program on the same day culminates with a performance by John Summit at New Dance Order.
Such an ending once again demonstrates the breadth of the festival formula. Twenty One Pilots have for years combined alternative rock, electronic music, hip-hop and pop, Halsey moves between pop and an alternative expression, Ivete Sangalo represents one of Brazil's biggest stars of the mass concert scene, while Zara Larsson brings Scandinavian pop. Instead of a finale devoted to a single genre, Rock in Rio ends as a cross-section of different contemporary markets and audiences. It is a model that can appear programmatically eclectic, but it is precisely this breadth that has allowed the festival to maintain global recognition decades after its first edition was held in 1985.
Cidade do Rock as a multi-day entertainment complex
Music remains at the center of the event, but Rock in Rio's organizers have for years been developing Cidade do Rock as an all-day entertainment space. In addition to Palco Mundo and Sunset, the 2026 edition includes New Dance Order, Espaço Favela, Global Village and Supernova, while official announcements also mention additional content, food zones, attractions, and technological and stage installations. Organizers have also announced a new visual concept for New Dance Order with extensive LED scenography, while the festival app allows visitors to create a personal schedule, view services, maps of the site and some of the activities. In this way, the audience experience is not reduced to a few evening headliners, but to spending many hours in a complex with parallel programs.
Major traffic and security operation around the Olympic Park
The city authorities of Rio de Janeiro have prepared a special traffic, health and security plan for all seven days of the festival. According to an announcement by the city administration dated August 27, the main recommendation for visitors is to use public transport because there is no official parking for the festival audience around the venue, while restrictions and road closures are being introduced on surrounding roads. A special BRT Expresso Rock in Rio line connects key terminals with the Olympic Park area, while the Jardim Oceânico metro station is planned as an important transfer hub for the BRT. The city administration has also announced a special nighttime metro schedule, as well as additional lines and extended operation of parts of the public transport system.
The operational plan also illustrates the scale of festival security. The city states that audience movement and road conditions will be monitored by around 800 cameras, along with three drones and an advanced base of Rio de Janeiro's Operations and Resilience Center in the Olympic Park area. The Municipal Guard is deploying more than 400 personnel per day to traffic management, terminals and key access routes, while other city services cover public order, cleaning, consumer protection and visitor assistance. The health plan provides for six medical stations inside Cidade do Rock and 16 ambulances for possible transfers, in coordination with the municipal health system.
A festival with an economic impact extending far beyond the concert grounds
Rock in Rio is important not only as a cultural event but also as a powerful economic generator for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's broader events industry. According to a Fundação Getulio Vargas study published by the organizers ahead of the festival and reported by Brazilian business media, the 2026 edition could generate around 3.36 billion Brazilian reais in economic impact. The same estimate refers to approximately 33,900 jobs associated with the festival, around 22,800 of them direct and 11,100 indirect. The calculation includes sectors such as accommodation, hospitality, transport, tourism, retail, security and production.
The estimated number of visitors also explains why city services treat the festival as an operation affecting a significantly broader area than the Olympic Park itself. According to figures reported by Brazilian media based on the FGV estimate and organizational plans, around 700,000 visitors are expected over the entire edition. This increases demand for accommodation, transport, restaurants and tourist attractions and confirms Rock in Rio as one of the city's most internationally visible events.
São Paulo simultaneously welcomes major international tours
While Rio de Janeiro focuses attention on Cidade do Rock during the first four days, São Paulo has its own strong concert offering during the same period. UOL reported that aespa performs on September 4 at Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu as part of the SYNK: COMPLæX tour. The next day Sofi Tukker plays a separate show at Sonora Garden before appearing at Rock in Rio, while on September 6 MGK performs at Audio in São Paulo after his festival appearance in Rio the previous day. On the same Sunday, Nova Twins, who open Rock in Rio on September 4, hold a standalone concert at Cine Joia.
Maroon 5 further connects the two markets. The band performs on September 6 in São José do Rio Preto, on September 8 in São Paulo at Nubank Parque, and then takes on the role of Rock in Rio headliner on September 12. UOL also lists a Laufey concert on September 9 at Espaço Unimed, just two days after her performance at Sunset in Rio de Janeiro. This overlap shows how a major festival does not operate in isolation: international tours often use their arrival in Brazil for additional concerts in other cities, turning the beginning of September 2026 into a concentrated week of major performances across multiple locations.
