Ronaldo writes Al Nassr history: with his 104th league goal he surpasses Al Sahlawi, 22 more to reach 1,000
RIYADH - Cristiano Ronaldo continued pushing the boundaries even at the age of 41. The Portuguese striker scored the winning goal in Al Nassr's 2:1 home victory over Al Taawoun in Riyadh, became the club's outright record holder for goals in the Saudi Pro League era and at the same time reached the 978th goal of his professional career.
On August 28 at Al Awwal Park, Al Nassr had to come through yet another demanding comeback. Al Taawoun took the lead as early as the 11th minute through Bassam Al Hurayji, while the hosts did not equalize until the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, when Samu Costa brought the match back level with a precise strike from outside the penalty area. Five minutes after the break, Ronaldo decided it. After Joao Felix's run and cut-back, Mohamed Simakan sent a shot toward goal, and the Portuguese captain changed the direction of the ball from close range and sent it into the net for the final 2:1. The official Saudi Pro League website recorded the goal as Ronaldo's 104th in 110 league appearances for Al Nassr.
The goal that delivered victory and a new club record
Until the match against Al Taawoun, Al Nassr's Saudi Pro League record had been held by former Saudi international Mohammed Al Sahlawi with 103 goals. Ronaldo drew level with him in the second round of the current season, when he came on as a substitute and scored in a 4:0 victory against Al Riyadh, and just one week later he went a step further. According to the league's official data, his 104th goal also moved him into fourth place on the all-time list of top scorers in the history of the Saudi professional championship. The achievement carries even more weight because the Portuguese player only joined the club at the beginning of 2023, after the end of his second spell at Manchester United.
The manner in which the record-breaking goal was scored once again showed one of Ronaldo's most recognizable characteristics: appearing at the right time in the area where matches are decided. Joao Felix created an overload on the left side and sent the ball backward, Simakan shot toward goal, and Ronaldo reacted in front of Al Taawoun's defense. There was no further change to the score after the goal, although both teams tried to find another opportunity. Al Nassr preserved the lead, while Ronaldo received the player-of-the-match award after the game. In a statement carried by the Saudi Pro League, he emphasized that he considers the record a collective result of the team and thanked his teammates and supporters for their support.
For Al Nassr, the goal was not important only because of the individual statistics. The team won a second consecutive league match after falling behind, which at the start of its title defense was an indication of the squad's psychological resilience. Against Al Taawoun, the response came immediately before halftime and then very quickly again at the start of the second half. Ronaldo said after the match, according to the league's official publication, that his team had not started the game well, but that after the equalizer it played faster, created more opportunities and deserved the victory. That reaction continued the pattern seen only a few days earlier against Al Ettifaq.
Al Nassr opened the season with four league victories
With the victory against Al Taawoun, the defending champions reached 12 points from the first four rounds of the 2026/27 Saudi Pro League. According to league data after the matches on August 28, Al Nassr had a perfect record and a goal difference of 12:3, while Al Hilal had nine points with one match in hand and the same overall goal difference. Al Hilal's postponed match against Al Ahli is scheduled for September 1, so the early standings still do not provide a complete picture of the balance among the main title contenders. Nevertheless, four victories in four rounds gave Al Nassr an ideal start to the defense of the championship trophy.
Particularly striking was the previous victory over Al Ettifaq. On August 25, Al Nassr were reduced to ten men as early as the 12th minute after goalkeeper Bento was sent off, and then fell 2:0 behind. Despite that, Ange Postecoglou's team completed a full comeback in the closing stages and won 3:2, with two goals from Sadio Mane and an equalizing goal from Abdulelah Al Amri. Ronaldo was substituted immediately after halftime, and the coach later explained that the decision was connected with the tactical demands of playing with one player fewer and the fact that the captain was only just returning to full rhythm after an extended break. Three days later Ronaldo was back in the starting lineup and responded with the winning goal.
That context is also important for understanding Ronaldo's start to the new season. The Al Nassr captain missed his team's first two matches of the new campaign, one in the league and one in the King's Cup, after an extended break for professional and personal reasons, as announced by the league. He returned to league action on August 21 against Al Riyadh, coming off the bench in the 62nd minute, and seven minutes before the end he scored the fourth goal in a 4:0 victory. That goal drew him level with Al Sahlawi at the top of the club's league scoring chart. In his very next appearance, as a starter against Al Ettifaq, he played the first half, and against Al Taawoun came confirmation that his return to competitive rhythm was accelerating.
From 978 to 1,000: the final stretch of a record followed by the entire football world
The goal against Al Taawoun was, according to current statistical totals reported by relevant sports media, the 978th official goal of Ronaldo's senior professional career. He needs 22 more to reach the mark of 1,000. That number has for some time been one of the main individual stories surrounding his career in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudi Pro League itself highlighted the race toward the thousandth goal as one of the central themes of the 2026/27 championship in its season preview. At the start of the season, the league stated that he needed 24 more goals, and two league goals in the meantime reduced the gap to 22.
When comparing total goal counts across different periods of football history, it is important to take into account that the methodology of individual statistical databases may differ, especially when older matches, unofficial games and friendly appearances are counted. The figure of 978 in this case refers to the total of official senior goals currently used in reports about Ronaldo's journey toward the four-digit mark. Regardless of methodological differences in historical comparisons, approaching the figure of 1,000 in official matches remains an exceptionally rare and globally followed sporting achievement. Ronaldo, meanwhile, continues to play at the highest level of Saudi club football and remains captain of the reigning champions.
His scoring rate in recent seasons shows why the target is no longer viewed as an abstract possibility. In the 2025/26 season he scored 28 league goals, according to official Saudi Pro League data, and finished behind top scorer Julian Quinones, who scored 33. The season before that, Ronaldo won his second consecutive league Golden Boot with 25 goals, while in each of his three full league campaigns in Saudi Arabia he reached at least 25 goals. Such consistency explains why the remaining 22 goals, although still representing a major sporting challenge, appear achievable if he stays healthy and retains his role as the first-choice striker.
The record comes after the season in which Al Nassr finally won the title
Ronaldo arrived in Saudi Arabia with an enormous individual legacy, but the biggest domestic trophy with Al Nassr eluded him for a long time. That changed in May 2026, when the Riyadh club won the Saudi Pro League for the first time since the 2018/19 season. The title was confirmed with a 4:1 victory against Damac in the final round, and Ronaldo scored two goals in the decisive match. According to the league's official report, he finished the championship with 28 goals, five fewer than top scorer Quinones, but finally added a Saudi league title to his collection of league trophies won in England, Spain and Italy.
That title also changed expectations ahead of the 2026/27 season. Al Nassr are no longer trying to end a long drought, but are defending the title and seeking to confirm continuity in a league that in recent years has brought together a large number of internationally renowned players. The team also changed coaches during the summer. Australian Ange Postecoglou took over the club at the beginning of July on a two-year contract, replacing Jorge Jesus, who left after the championship-winning season. Postecoglou has won trophies in Australia, Japan, Scotland and England during his career, and arrived in Saudi Arabia with the clear task of keeping Al Nassr at the top.
The new coach took over a squad that retained most of the key players from the championship-winning team. Alongside Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Joao Felix and Kingsley Coman remained in the attacking section of the team, while Samu Costa arrived as an important summer reinforcement in midfield. It was Costa who scored the equalizing goal against Al Taawoun, his second in three league appearances according to the competition's official report. Felix and Simakan were involved in the move for the winning goal, further demonstrating the breadth of attacking options available to Postecoglou. For a team competing in multiple competitions, such distribution of responsibility could prove decisive over the course of a long season.
Ronaldo under contract until 2027 and still at the center of Al Nassr's project
Back in June 2025, Al Nassr confirmed that Ronaldo had extended his contract until 2027, removing short-term uncertainty surrounding his future and clearly demonstrating that the Portuguese striker remains the central figure of the sporting project. His influence is not limited only to his number of goals: his role as captain, his experience of winning the biggest European trophies and his enormous international recognition give him a special status both in the dressing room and beyond it. At the same time, in terms of results, the standard remains the same as throughout his entire career - goals, victories and trophies.
That is precisely why the record of 104 league goals for Al Nassr has a double meaning. On the one hand, it is a club record in the professional era of the Saudi championship, achieved in only 110 league appearances. On the other hand, that goal is part of a much larger tally that brings Ronaldo closer to the thousandth goal of his senior career. Every subsequent appearance therefore carries two parallel narratives: Al Nassr's fight to defend the title and the personal race of its captain toward a mark that only a few years ago seemed almost unattainable.
For now, the club's priority is to maintain its winning rhythm. Four league victories at the start of the season have given Postecoglou an ideal results foundation, but the standings will change quickly as rivals play their postponed matches and the schedule becomes more congested. Al Nassr have already shown in the opening rounds that they can win convincingly, but also turn around matches in which they find themselves in serious trouble. Ronaldo was the man who decided the result against Al Taawoun, and his next number is now perfectly clear: the 979th goal of his career. There are 22 steps left to the great thousand, and every one of them will be followed far beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia.
