Chelsea joins race for Manu Koné and threatens Manchester United's plans
Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Roma midfielder Manu Koné and could complicate Manchester United's plans, with the French international being monitored as one of the possible final pieces in the rebuilding of their midfield. According to reports published by the British media in mid-July, the London club enquired about the terms of a possible transfer, but there is currently no confirmation that an official offer has arrived in Rome. According to the same sources, Roma are prepared to consider a sale if they receive a fee close to £50 million, although the Italian club have not publicly announced a price or confirmed negotiations. Manchester United had already made contact to assess the availability of the 25-year-old midfielder, but the absence of a formal offer has left room for Chelsea and other interested clubs. Koné's market position was further strengthened by his performances for France at the 2026 World Cup, where he developed from a wider-rotation player into an important part of the team.
At this stage, this is a transfer race based on enquiries, discussions and an assessment of the conditions, rather than a completed deal. As of 17 July, neither Chelsea, Manchester United nor Roma had officially announced that they were negotiating Koné's transfer. Such a distinction is important during a period in which a club's interest is often presented as an imminent agreement, even though there can be a significant financial and sporting gap between initial contact and the signing of a contract. The reports nevertheless suggest that the number of serious candidates is increasing and that Roma can use the competition to maintain a high price. For both English clubs, Koné represents a different profile from most of their existing midfielders: a physically strong, mobile player capable of gaining ground with the ball, breaking up opposition attacks and playing in several roles.
Chelsea explore the possibility of a transfer without an official offer
According to reports carried by TEAMtalk, GiveMeSport and other British media, Chelsea have made fresh enquiries to Roma and Koné's representatives in order to establish the financial terms, the player's position and the possibility of quickly entering into a deal. Such contact does not mean that the London club have decided to pay the requested fee, but it shows that Koné is no longer merely a name on a broader list of candidates. New head coach Xabi Alonso officially took charge of the team on 1 July after signing a four-year contract with Chelsea, and the club presented his appointment as the beginning of a new sporting phase. In his first address, Alonso emphasised the need to build a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level, so every potential signing is being assessed through the demands of his style of play, with an emphasis on control of the ball, intensity and tactical adaptability.
In such a system, Koné could operate as a midfielder who connects the defensive and attacking phases. He is not a classic "number six" who stays exclusively in front of the centre-backs, but neither is he a midfielder whose value is primarily measured by goals and final passes. His main strength is his ability to receive the ball under pressure, turn forward and progress through the centre of the pitch, either by carrying the ball or through short combinations. Roma's official statistics for the latest season list a 90 percent pass-completion rate, 80 interceptions, 84 attempted tackles and 157 duels won, along with two goals and three assists. The numbers alone do not explain every tactical detail, but they confirm that he is a player who participates in a large number of contacts and defensive actions while maintaining security in distribution.
Also important for Chelsea is the fact that Koné can play in a midfield pairing, as a left or right-sided central midfielder, and in a more mobile role in front of the back line. Alonso has used different formations throughout his coaching career, but he has regularly demanded midfielders capable of quickly changing the height of their position and creating numerical superiority in the first phase of build-up play. The Frenchman fits that requirement in terms of profile, particularly in matches in which more aggressive pressing and greater protection of space after losing the ball are needed. At the same time, any transfer will also depend on outgoing deals, the distribution of minutes and an assessment of whether Chelsea should invest further in an area in which they already have a large number of young and expensive players. For that reason, the initial enquiries may be preparation for a concrete offer, but they may also be a way for the club to keep an option open while assessing other targets.
Manchester United have already rebuilt their midfield, but want another profile
Manchester United did not enter the summer transfer window without making previous moves. The club officially signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea on 13 July and confirmed the arrival of Youri Tielemans a day later. Santos brings energy, progressive passing and developmental potential, while Tielemans offers Premier League experience, composure in possession and the ability to create from deeper areas. Their arrivals show that rebuilding the midfield is one of the main tasks of the sporting leadership, but they do not rule out another transfer. On the contrary, according to British reports, head coach Michael Carrick wants an additional midfielder with a pronounced physical component and the ability to carry the ball through opposition lines, and Koné fits precisely that description.
Carrick received a permanent contract in May after taking charge of the team in January, which enabled him to have greater influence over the construction of the squad for the 2026/27 season. United's official website currently lists, among others, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Santos and Tielemans among the midfielders. It is a group with different characteristics, but Koné would bring a combination of strength in duels, mobility and progression with the ball that is not represented in exactly the same way among the others. In a team that wants to play more aggressively and regain possession more quickly, such a profile could be important both as a starter and as a solution for high-intensity matches.
United's interest, however, does not mean that the deal is close to completion. TEAMtalk previously reported that Koné was on the shortlist and that Roma were prepared to talk for the right price, while talkSPORT stated that the English club had sent an enquiry after his World Cup performances. The distinction between an enquiry and an offer is once again crucial: the first step is used to check availability, the structure of a possible payment, commissions and the player's interest, while an official offer opens concrete negotiations between the clubs. Chelsea can therefore "disrupt United's plans" simply by entering discussions because that increases the pressure to make a decision, reduces the possibility of waiting and gives Roma an additional argument for not lowering the price. United must assess whether they want to move quickly from monitoring to making an offer or whether they will risk allowing their London rivals to position themselves as the more convincing option.
The financial aspect is also far from insignificant. After two new midfielders, another deal worth around £50 million would represent a major additional investment in the same area of the team. The club must also take into account the overall budget, possible sales and other positions that require reinforcements. Koné's price could rise if additional clubs become involved, but it could also fall if Roma decide that a sale is necessary before the closing stages of the transfer window. That is precisely why the negotiating dynamics in July do not have to be the same as at the end of August, when deadlines become shorter and replacement options increasingly limited.
Roma have a strong negotiating position, but have not closed the door to a sale
Roma signed Koné from Borussia Mönchengladbach in August 2024 on loan with an obligation to buy, as was officially announced when the transfer was completed. The Frenchman quickly adapted to Serie A and became important because of his ability to cover large areas, escape pressure and contribute defensively. According to a TEAMtalk report, he made 37 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 season, scoring two goals and providing three assists. His value to Roma is therefore not merely financial: by selling him, the club would lose a player in his prime who can perform several tasks and who is already adapted to Italian football. On the other hand, a high transfer fee could enable investment in several positions and deliver a significant profit compared with the cost of his arrival.
The reported price of around £50 million has not been officially confirmed, so it should be viewed as a media assessment of Roma's threshold for negotiations. In such a situation, the Italian club have no reason to rush while several buyers are gathering information, especially after Koné gained additional international visibility. If Chelsea and United decide that the player is crucial to their plans, Roma can insist on a higher fixed fee, fewer bonuses and a more favourable payment schedule. If the interest remains at the level of enquiries, the club can keep the midfielder and count on him for the new season. At present, it is therefore unclear whether there is a price that any interested club is actually prepared to pay, rather than merely an amount being mentioned in discussions and reports.
Roma are also preparing for European and domestic commitments, which means the timing of any potential sale would be just as important as the total transfer fee. A departure after the start of the season would make finding a replacement more difficult, while an earlier agreement would allow the sporting leadership to direct the available funds towards preselected targets. For Koné, the Premier League would represent a new stage of his career after France, Germany and Italy, but the available information does not confirm that the player has requested a departure or chosen one of the English clubs. Until his position becomes a public statement or a concrete decision, Roma retain control of the process.
The World Cup increased interest in the French international
Koné arrived at the 2026 World Cup after a period in which, according to comments he made to the French Football Federation, two hamstring injuries at the beginning of the year had slowed him down. Despite that, he earned an important role during the tournament. Official French Football Federation data state that he appeared in five matches, started four times and played 426 minutes. He started the group-stage matches against Iraq and Norway, then the knockout matches against Paraguay and Morocco, while in the 0-2 semi-final defeat by Spain in Arlington on 14 July, he came on and played 57 minutes. France missed out on the final after that defeat and were scheduled to play the third-place match on 18 July.
The tournament highlighted the qualities that clubs look for in a modern midfielder. Koné can join a high press, track an opponent through the centre, close down space near the touchline and immediately launch a transition after winning the ball. He is secure enough in possession that he does not have to resolve every situation with a simple backward pass, while in duels he uses his strength and long stride. His play is not without risk, however: aggressive ball carrying can take him into crowded areas, while leaving his starting position requires a sound structure behind him. That is precisely why the question of the tactical environment could be decisive when choosing his next club.
As of 17 July, he had made 19 appearances for the France senior national team, according to FFF records, after making his debut against Italy in September 2024. Before that, he won a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and was part of the French generation that finished third in the 2025 Nations League. Such international experience reduces some of the risk that usually accompanies the transfer of a player without appearances on the biggest stage. At the same time, five good matches at a major tournament should not be the sole basis of an assessment; Chelsea and United are monitoring a broader sample of his performances in the Bundesliga, Serie A and international football.
The decision will depend on the price, role and speed of negotiations
For Koné, choosing between Chelsea and Manchester United, if both clubs actually submit offers, will not come down solely to the transfer fee received by Roma. The proposed role, competition for a place, the European programme, the length of the contract and the coach's sporting plan will all be important. Chelsea can offer him the opportunity to work with Alonso on a project that is only now taking its final shape, while United can emphasise a clearly defined rebuilding of the midfield under Carrick and their need for his specific profile. Both clubs have the financial strength to complete a major transfer, but both must also decide whether Koné is a priority or one of several parallel options.
Chelsea's greatest advantage at this moment could be their willingness to take advantage of United's hesitation. United's greatest advantage is their earlier demonstration of interest and the fact that the club have already clearly directed the transfer window towards the reconstruction of the midfield. Roma, meanwhile, have no need to accept the first proposal if they believe that competition will increase the value of the deal. For that reason, the next important step would be an official offer rather than another enquiry or informal contact.
Until then, the only confirmed facts are that Koné is a Roma player, a French international and one of the midfielders whose name is increasingly being linked with the Premier League. Reports of Chelsea's interest make Manchester United's situation more complicated, but they do not mean that the London club have taken the lead or that the transfer is close to completion. The race will become real only when one of the interested clubs accepts Roma's financial level and offers the player a role that matches his ambitions. Until then, it remains an open market contest in which every new enquiry increases the pressure but does not yet produce a winner.
